Vampira, Maila Nurmi, was a Hollywood legend best known for her popular TV and film character Vampira. The 86 year old star passed away in her sleep yesterday.
Maila Nurmi was born as Maila Elizabeth Syrjaniemi. She was born on in Petsamo, Finland, which is now Pechenga, Russia in 1921. Vampira was developed in the 1950’s and was a popular character as a television host and in films.
Before Elvira, Vampira hosted a show on KABC in Los Angeles and introduced horror movies.
Although Nurmi appeared in numerous movies such as The Beat Generation and The Big Operator, she is better known for her performances in the Ed Wood movie, Plan 9 From Outer Space and the Tim Burton film Ed Wood as Lisa Marie.
